Why It’s Time to Switch to the R1234yf 10kg Cylinder

by NRL Marketing / Wednesday, 29 July 2026 / Published in Marketing

With temperatures regularly exceeding 30°C, vehicle air conditioning has gone from being a comfort feature to an essential. Unsurprisingly, 2026 has been a record-breaking year for automotive A/C servicing, driving demand for refrigerant to unprecedented levels.

For years, R1234yf has been supplied in 5kg cylinders, while R134a has traditionally been available in 12kg cylinders. The smaller fill weight for R1234yf made sense when the refrigerant was new, more expensive, and demand was relatively low. It gave workshops a more affordable way to adopt the new refrigerant.

Today, however, the R1234yf 10kg cylinder represents a more practical solution for a mature and growing market.

As more vehicles have been equipped with R1234yf air conditioning systems, demand for the refrigerant has grown rapidly while its cost has fallen over time. Yet it continues to be supplied in 5kg cylinders – creating unnecessary inefficiencies throughout the supply chain. Adopting the R1234yf 10kg cylinder as the industry standard would help address these challenges.

The numbers speak for themselves. Filling 1,000kg of refrigerant into 200 × 5kg cylinders takes considerably longer than filling the same quantity into 100 × 10kg cylinders. It also doubles the number of cylinders that must be handled, transported, tested and returned, adding avoidable costs and delays at every stage of the supply chain.

Moving to a 10kg fill weight delivers clear benefits for everyone.

Manufacturers can improve production efficiency, distributors can increase product availability and streamline logistics, and workshops benefit from fewer cylinder changes, reduced downtime and less money tied up in cylinder deposits. For businesses across the automotive aftermarket, the R1234yf 10kg cylinder offers a more efficient and cost-effective way to meet rising demand.

The market has matured, demand is at record levels, and the 5kg cylinder is no longer the most efficient way to supply it.
